Road Closures

The following Road Closure(s) or other road restrictions have been advised by Essex County Council under Section 14(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended and may affect village residents.  Please note that sometimes the dates provided are estimates only and the order may provide for an extended period of closure in order to complete works particularly if weather-affected.  Any queries regarding Road Closures ought to be made to the Area Highway Manager on 01206 838600.

27th - 30th November 2011 Northbound A12
A12 road closure

To temporarily close the northbound carriageway of the A12 between J27 (Spring Lane Interchange) and J29 (Crown Interchange) to undertake carriageway repairs between 9pm and 5am each night.  The southbound carriageway is unaffected.

Northbound traffic will be diverted via the A133 Cymbeline Way / Colne Bank Avenue and A1232 Ipswich Road to rejoin the A12 at Crown Interchange.

19th June & 10th July 2011 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill Level Crossing for 50 metres either side of the level crossing from 01:30-13:30 on 19th June and 01:00 - 07:00 on 10th July. 

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road - Spring Lane - Argent Lane and vice versa.

Where possible access to emergency and residents vehicles will be maintained but may be subject to delay whilst the works area is made safe.
 

17th & 24th April, 1st, 8th & 15th May 2011 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill Level Crossing for 50 metres either side of the level crossing from 01:00-06:30 on 17th & 24th April and 1st May, 01:00 - 06:00 on 8th May and 01:50 - 06:50 on 15th May. 

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road - Spring Lane - Argent Lane and vice versa.

Where possible access to emergency and residents vehicles will be maintained but may be subject to delay whilst the works area is made safe.
 

4th - 9th April 2011 Halstead Road (off Chitts Hill)


 

To temporarily close Halstead Road, Colchester from a point 110 metres north-west of its junction with London Road for 40 metres. The closure is scheduled to take place from 8:30am on 4th April 2011 and last for 5 days  to enable drain repairs to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be via A1124 London Road, A1124 Essex Yeomanry Way, A1124 Halstead Road and vice versa.  Where possible access to emergency and residents vehicles will be maintained but may be subject to delay whilst the works area is made safe.

 

2nd - 3rd April 2011 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill for 50 metres either side of the level crossing from 23:30pm on Saturday 2nd April until 07:00am on Sunday 3rd April.  The closure is required facilitate track maintenance work by Network Rail.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road – Spring Lane – Argent Lane and vice versa.  Pedestrian access will be maintained during the closure.

 

15th - 16th January 2011 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill Level Crossing for 20 metres either side of the level crossing from 11.30pm on Saturday 15th January to 7.00am on Sunday 16th January 2011.  The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst Network Rail change the rails through the crossing.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road - Spring Lane - Argent Lane and vice versa.

Pedestrian access will be maintained during the closure.
 

30th - 31st October 2010 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill for 20 metres either side of the level crossing from 23:30pm on Saturday 30th October until 07:00am on Sunday 31st October.  The closure is required facilitate urgent track and crossing inspections by Network Rail.

An alternative route is available via Halstead Road, Spring Lane and Argents Lane.

 

25th - 30th October 2010 Spring Lane North / Bakers Lane


 

Closure of Spring Lane North/Bakers Lanefrom the junction of Braiswick (B1508) to the junction of Cymbeline Way roundabout with Spring Lane from 25th October 2010 for five days to enable Essex County Council to undertake carriageway patching.

The alternative route will be from the junction of Braiswick to Bergholt Road to West Way
to Colne Bank Avenue to Cymbeline Way roundabout and vice versa.

Access for emergency service vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all times during the closure.

2nd - 3rd October 2010 A12 Junctions 27 to 29


 

Overnight full closure of the A12 on both carriageways between Junctions 27 and 29 in order to link the new slip roads to for the new Junction 28.  More details are available in the A12 Newsletter here.
13th & 20th September 2010 for up to 6 months The Street, Chappel

  1. To introduce a temporary 30mph speed limit on that length of A1124 Colchester Road, Chappel/Wakes Colne from a point 365 metres east of its junction with Spring Gardens Road south-east for a distance of 560 metres for 3 months commencing 13th September. The speed limit is currently 60MPH. The temporary speed limit is required for the safety of the work force and public whilst reconstruction works are undertaken on Broom House Bridge.  (Blue highlight)
     
  2. To temporarily close that length of The Street, in the Parish of Chappel/Wakes Colne from its junction with A 1124 Colchester Road in a south westerly direction for a distance of approximately 70 metres to the entrance to The Swan car park for 6 months commencing 20th September.  The temporary closure is required whilst reconstruction works are undertaken on Chappel Bridge and a new footbridge is constructed. (Red highlight)

The alternative route for the closure of The Street will be via A 1124 Colchester Road towards Colchester to the A12, join the A12 towards Chelmsford and London, leave the A12 at Junction 25 (Marks Tey junction) and join the A120 towards Coggeshall and Braintree, turn right onto Great Tey Road through Great Tey and Swan Street to Chappel and vice versa.  Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times during the closure.

 

13th - 23rd September 2010 Fossetts Lane

To temporarily close that length of Fossetts Lane, in the from its junction with Rams Farm Road to its junction with Church Road.  The closure is scheduled to commence on 13th September 2010 for 10 days and  is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst carriageway repair works are undertaken by Essex County Council.

The alternative route will be via Rams Farm Road - Moat Road - Church Road and vice versa.  Access for emergency service vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained at all times during the closure.

3rd - 4th September 2010 Halstead Road

To temporarily close Halstead Road, Colchester between its junctions with Chitts Hill and A 1124 London Road. The closure is scheduled to take place between 8pm on 3rd September and 5am on 4th September 2010 to enable Essex County Council to carry out essential carriageway resurfacing works.

An alternative route is available via A 1124 London Road, Essex Yeomanry Way, A1124 Halstead Road, and Halstead Road between the A 1124 and Chitts Hill, and vice versa.  Access to property will be maintained during the closure as will access for cyclists.

22nd - 23rd August 2010 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill for 20 metres either side of the level crossing from 23:30pm on Saturday 22nd August until 06:00am on Sunday 23rd August.  The closure is required facilitate track maintenance work by Network Rail.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road – Spring Lane – Argent Lane and vice versa.  Pedestrian access will be maintained during the closure.

A12 Junctions 27 to 29

Overnight full closure of the A12 on both carriageways between Junctions 27 and 29 as part of the constructions works to develop the new Junction 28.  More details are available in the A12 Newsletter here.
19th July 2010 for 5 days London Road, Great Horkesley

To temporarily close London Road, Great Horkesley from its junction with Coach Road to its junction with Fishponds Hill. The closure is scheduled to start on 19 July 2010 for 5 days between the hours of 8am and 5pm and is required to enable Essex County Council to carry out urgent carriageway repairs.

An alternative route is available via Coach Road and A134 The Causeway. Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

12th July 2010 for 5 days Turkey Cock Lane, Eight Ash Green

To temporarily close Turkey Cock Lane, Eight Ash Green from its junction with London Road, Stanway to its junction with Halstead Road, Eight Ash Green. The closure is scheduled to take place on 12 July 2010 for 5 days and is required to enable carriageway repairs by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via B1408 London Road, Stanway, A1124 Essex Yeomanry Way, and A1124 Halstead Road.  Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

 

7th July 2010 for 4 days Vinesse Road, Little Horkesley

To temporarily close Vinesse Road, Little Horkesley from its junction with London Road to its junction with Fish Ponds Hill. The closure is scheduled to take place on 7 July 2010 for 4 days and is required to enable carriageway resurfacing by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via London Road and Fish ponds Hill and vice versa. Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

5th July 2010 for 5 days Hall Road, West Bergholt

To temporarily close Hall Road, West Bergholt from its junction with Lexden Road to its junction with B1508 Colchester Road. The closure is scheduled to take place on 5 July 2010 for 5 days and is required to enable carriageway works by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via Lexden Road and B1508 Colchester Road. Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

 

28th June 2010 for 5 days London Road, Great Horkesley

To temporarily close London Road, Great Horkesley from its junction with Coach Road to its junction with Fishponds Hill. The closure is scheduled to take place on 28 June 2010 between 0730 hours to 1800 hours for 5 days and is required to enable surface dressing works to take place by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via Coach Road, Old House Road, A134 The Causeway and London Road and vice versa.  Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

 

29th - 30th May 2010 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill for 20 metres either side of the level crossing from 23:00pm on Saturday 29th May until 06:30am on Sunday 30th May.  The closure is required facilitate track maintenance work by Network Rail.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road – Spring Lane – Argent Lane and vice versa.

 

17th May 2010 for 5 days London Road, Great Horkesley

To temporarily close London Road, Great Horkesley from its junction with Coach Road to its junction with Fishponds Hill. The closure is scheduled to take place on 17 May 2010 between 0800 hours to 1700 hours for 5 days and is required to enable machine surfacing and surface dressing to the carriageway by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via Coach Road, The Causeway and London Road and vice versa. Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

12th May 2010 for two days Chapel Road

To temporarily close Chapel Road, West Bergholt, between its junctions with Colchester Road and New Church Road. The closure is to facilitate urgent carriageway repairs by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via Lexden Road and Colchester Road.

Access to property will be maintained during the closure.

6th April 2010 for two weeks Coach Road, Great Horkesley

To temporarily close Coach Road, in the Parish of Great Horkesley, from its junction with Malvern Way westwards for 30 metres from 6 April 2010 for 2 weeks.  The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst works to lay a new water main is undertaken outside of Bishop William School.

The alternative route will be via Old House Road - A 134 The Causeway and vice versa. 

8th March 2010 for 5 days Baker's Lane

To temporarily close Baker’s Lane, Colchester between its junctions with Braiswick and Spring Lane; and Spring Lane, Colchester between its junctions with Baker’s Lane and Cymbeline Way.  The closure is required to enable urgent carriageway repairs to be undertaken by Essex County Council.

The alternative route is via Cymbeline Way, Colne Bank Avenue, Westway, Bergholt Road and Braiswick.

 

6th - 7th March 2010 and
13th - 14th March 2010
Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill for 20 metres either side of the level crossing from 23:50pm on Saturday 6th March until 06:30am on Sunday 7th March and again between 23:00pm on 13th and 06:30am on Sunday 14th March.  The closure is required facilitate maintenance work to the level crossing by Network Rail.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road – Spring Lane – Argent Lane and vice versa.

 

4th March 2010 for 5 days Rams Farm Road, Fordham

To temporarily close Rams Farm Road, Fordham from a point approximately 220 metres west of its junction with the B1508 Colchester Road west for approximately 650 metres. The closure is scheduled to start on 4 March 2010 for 5 days to facilitate urgent repair work to damaged telephone cables by BT.

An alternative route is available via B1508 Colchester Road, Packards Lane and Plummers Road and vice versa.

 

31st January 2010 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill for 20 metres either side of the level crossing on 31st January 2010 between 01:50am and 06:50am or where appropriate signs are showing and weather permitting.  The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst maintenance works are undertaken my Network Rail.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road – Spring Lane – Argent Lane and vice versa.

Pedestrian access will be maintained during the closure.

 

25th January 2010 for
5 days
A134 Nayland Road, and The Causeway, Great Horkesley

ECC has introduced a temporary 10mph speed limit under Section 14(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, in The A134 Nayland Road and The Causeway, Great Horkesley between its junctions with London Road and Coach Road. The restriction is required in the interests of public safety and the safety of workers whilst resurfacing works are carried out by Essex County Council.

 

9th October for
3 to 4 days 2009
Chitts Hill Level Crossing ECC has temporarily closed Chitts Hill, Colchester for a distance of 25 metres either side of the level crossing. The closure will start on 9 October 2009 and is required because of the likelihood of danger to the public due to a damaged electricity cable. Works to repair the cable are expected to last approximately 3-4 days.

An alternative route is available via Argents Lane, Spring Lane, Halstead Road and vice versa.

Access to property will be maintained during the closure.
 

24th - 28th August 2009 New Church Road

To temporarily close New Church Road from its junction with School Lane to its junction with Lexden Road commencing on 24th August for 5 days.  The closure is required for the safety of public and workforce whilst drainage works are undertaken.

The alternative route will be via School Lane, B1508 Colchester Road, Lexden Road and vice versa.

Pedestrian and emergency access will be maintained during the closure although there will be no access for cyclists.

 

23rd August & 28th August - 1st September 2009 Chitts Hill Level Crossing To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill Level Crossing for 20 metres either side of the level crossing on 23 August 2009 between 01:50am and 06:50am and also from 11:30pm on 28 August 2009 to 07:00am on 1 September 2009 or where appropriate signs are showing and weather permitting.  The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst maintenance works are undertaken my Network Rail.

The alternative route will be via Halstead Road – Spring Lane – Argent Lane and vice versa.

Pedestrian & cycle access will be maintained during the closure.

 

13th - 19th July 2009 Spring Lane


 

A temporary closure of Spring Lane between Spring Lane roundabout and Chase Way between 09:30am and 3:30pm each day.  The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst works to replace an aerial cable are undertaken by BT.

The alternative route will be via A133 Colchester by pass – A134 Station Way – North Station Road – B1508 Bergholt Road – Bakers Lane and vice versa.

Access for emergency service vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained at all times during the closure.

Although not in or adjacent to the village this may affect villagers using the route between Braiswick Road and Spring Lane Roundabout.
 

22nd - 26th June 2009 Argents Lane

A temporary closure of Argents Lane, Eight Ash Green and West Bergholt between its junctions with Chitts Hill and Spring Lane. The closure is scheduled to start on 22 June 2009 for 5 days to facilitate carriageway repair works by Essex County Council.

An alternative route is available via Chitts Hill, Halstead Road and Spring Lane and vice versa.

Access to property will be maintained during the closure.
 

22nd - 26th June 2009 Chapel Lane A temporary closure of Chapel Lane, West Bergholt from a point approximately 60 metres from its junction with Bourne Road for a distance of 20 metres, to a point adjacent with the property ‘Crispins’. The closure is required to enable Dyno-Rod to connect a re-routed sewer.

An alternative route is available via Bourne Road, Newbridge Hill and Chapel Road and vice versa.

Access to property will be maintained during the closure as will general access for cyclists and pedestrians.
 

1st June 2009 Chapel Lane A temporary closure of Chapel Lane from a point 60 metres north of its junction with Bourne Road proceeding northwards for a distance of 100 metres.  The closure is scheduled to take place between 08:30am and 4:30pm, and is required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst repair works are undertaken to water services.

The alternative route will be via Bourne Road – Queen Road – Chapel Road and vice versa.

Access for emergency service vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all times during the closure.
 

9th - 11th May,
22nd - 26th May and
31st May 2009
Chitts Hill Level Crossing A temporary closure of Chitts Hill for a distance of 20 metres either side of the level crossing.  The closures are scheduled from:
  •   00:30hrs on 9th May until 07:00hrs on 11th May
  •   23:30hrs on 22nd May until 04:00hrs on 26th May (now cancelled) and then
  •   07:30am until 08:30pm on 31st May

... and are required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst 'commissioning works' are undertaken by Mouchel.

An alternative route is available via Halstead Road, Spring Lane and Argents Lane and vice versa.

Access for pedestrians, including prams and wheelchairs, emergency services, residents and visitors will be maintained during the closure.
 

12th April and
3rd May 2009
Chitts Hill Level Crossing A temporary closure of Chitts Hill for a distance of 20 metres either side of the level crossing.  The closure is scheduled to take place between 01:35am and 06:55am on Sunday 12th April and and 01:45am and 06:50am on Sunday 3rd May and is to facilitate track works by Network Rail.

An alternative route is available via Halstead Road, Spring Lane and Argents Lane and vice versa.

Access for pedestrians, including prams and wheelchairs, emergency services, residents and visitors will be maintained during the closure.
 

6th April to
11th April 2009
Spring Lane, Eight Ash Green There will be a temporary closure of Spring Lane from its junction with Heath Road to its junction with A1124 Halstead Road in the Parish of Eight Ash Green  

The closures are required for the safety of the public and workforce whilst carriageway patching and repair works are undertaken by Essex County Council.  Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles, residents and visitors all times during the closure.

An alternative route will be available via Heath Road – Wood Lane – A1124 Halstead Road and vice versa.
 

14th March to
16th March 2009
Chitts Hill A temporary closure of Chitts Hill for a distance of 20 metres either side of the level crossing.  The closure is scheduled to take place from 05:00 hours on Saturday 14 March to 06:00 hours on Monday 16 March 2009 to facilitate track works.

An alternative route is available via Halstead Road, Spring Lane and Argents Lane and vice versa.

Access for pedestrians, including prams and wheelchairs, will be maintained during the closure.

3rd to 4th January 2009
Chitts Hill A temporary closure of Chitts Hill for a distance of 20 metres either side of the level crossing. The closure is scheduled to take place from 23:30 hours on Saturday 3rd January to 07:00 hours on Sunday 4th January to enable maintenance work to the railway to be undertaken.

An alternative route is available via Halstead Road, Spring Lane and Argents Lane and vice versa.

Cyclists, pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs will be able to travel through the closure.
 

CANCELLED on 1st December
8th December 2008 for 5 days
Spring Lane, Eight Ash Green A temporary closure to all traffic of Spring Lane, Eight Ash Green from its junction with Heath Road to its junction with A1124 Halstead Road.  An alternative route is available via Heath Road, Wood Lane and Halstead Road.

Access to property will be maintained during the closure.
 

26th to 27th October 2008 and between 9th and 11th November 2008 Chitts Hill A temporary closure of Chitts Hill for a distance of 20 metres either side of the level crossing. The closures are scheduled to take place from:
  •  01:45 hours on Sunday 26 October to 01:10 hours on Monday 27 October 2008
  •  23:00 hours on Sunday 09 November to 04:30 hours on Monday 10 November 2008
  •  23:00 hours on Monday 10 November to 04:30 hours on Tuesday 11 November 2008

... to facilitate track works.

An alternative route is available via Halstead Road, Spring Lane and Argents Lane and vice versa.

Access for pedestrians, including prams and wheelchairs, will be maintained during the closure.
 

25th & 26th October 2008 Chitts Hill & Halstead Road A temporary no waiting and no loading restriction in the lengths of road and during the dates and times specified. The restriction is required due to the likelihood of danger to the public and to maintain safe access to Holmwood House during the NSPCC book fair.

No Waiting and No Loading Between 8.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday 25 October and Sunday 26 October 2008.

Chitts Hill – both sides from the level crossing southwards and westwards to its junction with Halstead Road.

Halstead Road, Colchester – both sides from a point 20 metres west of its junction with Chitts Hill to a point 20 metres south of its junction with Chitts Hill.
 

3rd September 2008 for 3 days Fordham Place Road,
West Bergholt
Fordham Place Road, West Bergholt will be temporarily closed to all traffic for its entire length. The closure is scheduled to start on 03 September 2008 for 3 days to facilitate carriageway repairs.

An alternative route is available via Colchester Road and Coney Byes Farm Road and vice versa.

Access to property will be maintained during the closure.
