Essex
Police - Neighbourhood Policing
Neighbourhood policing is about local policing; police, partners and the
community working together, to identify and tackle issues of concern in Essex.
Neighbourhood
policing is about creating a team dedicated to each local area. The areas are
small and typically will include a sergeant, police constable, police community
support officer and special constables. The neighbourhood policing team will
work with local partners and you to make your neighbourhood a safer place.
The neighbourhood policing team for West Bergholt covers a wider area than
just our village and includes Fordham, Eight Ash Green, Boxted, Great and Little
Horkesley, and Wormingford. The team is based at Copford however to
provide an effective service the team are expected to be found more in the
communities they serve than in the office in Copford, the team are
- Sergeant Mike Lee - responsible for the day to day
operation;
- PC Vicky Sanders - our Neighbourhood Specialist
Officer (NSO); and
- PCSO Sue Donaldson -our Police Community Support
Officer.
In addition, up to three other Police Officers can be called upon, if
necessary, to deal with specific local policing needs. The Neighbourhood
Support Team (NST) provides a near 24 hour service from 8am to 4am. In
addition to the NST, emergency call out and traffic teams are enabled for
village issues as necessary.
Neighbourhood Support Team
The NST interfaces with the community either directly with residents, via our
Neighbourhood Watch team or through the Neighbourhood Action Panel (see below).
To be successful the NST has to work with the communities it is there to support
and relies on feedback of issues that are causing concern. Neighbourhood
Watch are the eyes and ears of community policing and are most effective when
issues are developing in our village i.e. antisocial behaviour, suspicious
activity or just awareness when security alarms are activated. Any
occurrence of such incidents can be recorded by an effective Watch team and
reported to the police for appropriate action to be taken. For many years
West Bergholt has been home to one of the most efficient Neighbourhood Watch
teams in the Borough. To continue this success our village desperately
needs a volunteer to take over the co-ordination of the village team and to act
as a local interface to the NST. If you want to make a major contribution
to your village and can provide a few hours of your time to co-ordinate our
Neighbourhood Watch team then please contact Richard Green on 01206 241716 or
email mngreen2@aol.com.
Neighbourhood Action Panel
The Neighbourhood Action Panel (NAP) is a government led initiative.
The panel is made up of non-police volunteers who live within the communities
served by the NAP. NAP’s have been established to record and co-ordinate
community issues that require resolution by the Police, Colchester Borough
Council, Essex County Council, Parish Councils or a combination of these
authorities. NAP meetings give residents the opportunity to formally
register issues or concerns and the NAP will agree community priorities and
decide on a realistic and achievable course of action. West Bergholt is
part of the “Colchester North Rural NAP” (formerly Constable NAP) which includes the villages to the north of
Colchester from Wormingford in the west to Dedham in the east. NAP meetings are
held regularly in one of the villages that form part of the Constable area.
Details of the next NAP meeting are available on our village web site
diary or through the
Colchester Borough Council web site.
Our Police Neighbourhood Support Team can be contacted on 0300 3334444 and is
made up of
