People will tell you that nothing much has ever happened in our village, a sleepy little place in the shadow of Colchester. In fact, West Bergholt has a rich and exciting history of its own...... "The Most Unfortunate and Ignorant Parish" by Jon LanderIn the 19th century, West Bergholt was known as "the most unfortunate and ignorant parish" in the whole of North Essex. A new book written by Jon Lander and published by the village Local History Group sets out to explain how it came to have such a bad reputation. The book traces the development of the village through the century from being a tiny poverty stricken group of farm workers cottages on West Bergholt Heath to something like its present relatively prosperous state. It features colour pictures of local landmarks which played a part in its history and describes the people who dominated village life. But why did letter writers to the Essex County Standard describe it as "a den of iniquity."?
