Gardening in West Bergholt

For the green-fingered amongst us there are two associations that might be of interest.

Affiliated with the Royal Horticultural SocietyWest Bergholt Gardener's Association

Large garden, small window box, devoted gardener or just a passing interest? Why not join your local gardening club?

We offer something for every taste with our diverse yearly programme.  Meetings are held at 7.30pm in the Orpen Hall on the third Mondays of February to May, and from September to November, plus the second Monday in December.  Speakers’ topics are varied on gardening related issues such as:

  • Top Ten Trees of Colchester;
  • Around the Flower Shows;
  • Hellebores in the Winter Garden;
  • Do your own Christmas arrangements;
  • To Prune and not to Prune;
  • Vegetables for Value;
  • Hardy Bulbs throughout the Year

Our Annual Plant sale, open to the public, takes place in May.  During the summer months we organise trips to national and local gardens of interest.  There is always a warm friendly welcome for members and visitors.  Joining us is simple and inexpensive with annual subscription at £9 and visitor's entry £3 per meeting.  For further information, please contact the Chair, Valerie Lofthouse or Treasurer, Terry Claydon. We look forward to seeing you. .

Allotment Holders

The Allotments of the village are maintaining their popularity and although there is a small turnover each year the Committee (as of November 2010) has a waiting list of 8 potential plot holders. In allocating vacant plots (5 rod plots only) priority will be given to those within the Parish Boundary and will be offered in order of the list until any vacant plot is taken up. An updated waiting list is posted on the site noticeboard.  Those requiring a plot should send a request to the Parish Council clerk – with name, dob, address, phone number and email address.

The Parish Council entrusts the management of the Allotment Site to The West Bergholt Allotment Holders Site Committee which meets about three times a year.  The committee is made up of volunteers who are an interface between plot holders and the Parish Council and help maintain the standards and rules applied by the Parish Council and interests of plot holders.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the sub committee (or acquiring an allotment) please contact us, details are on the notice board at the allotment site as are names of those currently waiting for a plot.

Recent committee minutes & other information of interest to Allotment Holders and gardeners generally will be posted here periodically:
